SCHOOL DROPOUT OF ROMA IN ROMANIA

Between antigypsyism, the socio – economic dysfunction of the
Romanian educational system and educational success

 

The present research paper aims to analyse in a qualitative manner the main and specific causes of school dropout in young Roma (including age, culture, economical status – poverty, social discrimination, infrastructure). Our purpose is to explore the phenomenon of school drop-out or early school-leaving as well as to identify its reasons among disadvantaged youth aged 14– 22, who failed to complete lower and/or upper secondary education, including of young people who dropped school to raise a family. In addition, the research includes 3 interviews with successful young Roma that are at postgraduate level (faculty, master and PhD) in order to analyse the educational success in a comparative manner.

Roma NGOs involvement within Local Action Groups of rural area
in the Western region of Romania

The present research aims to analyze the Roma NGO’s/ community involvement in the Local Action Groups’ (LAG) activity of the rural area in the Western region of Romania based on their relation with the public authorities and the LAG’s management teams. In this context, we aim to identify possible active measures for Roma NGO’s in order to strengthen the Roma involvement within the LAG’s and to analyze possible main obstacles based on actors’ perception and experience.

Antigypsyism at local level – recommendations from Romania

For the first time on 6 September 2017 in Ploiesti, ERGO together with its member Centrul de Resurse pentru Incluziune Sociala CRIS from Romania brought the topic of antigypsyism to the local level. Among the speakers were the Head of the European Commission’s Roma unit from DG Justice, Szabolcs Schmidt, representatives of the Romanian government and key actors from Romania who work on Roma issues.

ERGO’s Director Jamen Gabriela Hrabanova highlighted the importance of bringing up the issue of antigypsism at local level and of supporting institutions to understand its long term effects and its implications.

The mayor of the city of Ploiesti committed to reintegrate Roma people in his region.

Based on their experiences with working on the CLLD process, trainings with Local Action Group and their engagement at local level Asociatia Cris wrote a comprehensive recommendation paper addressed to the Mayor of Ploiesti with the aim of improving the situation of the local communities Mimiu and Catun.

The three main recommendations proposed are:

  • A more coherent design of intervention measures
  • A stronger role and participation of Roma
  • Combatting antigypsyism at the centre of policies.

Roma Regional Meeting on Roma community development in Romania

Nevo Parudimos, as a member of ERGO Network, organized a working meeting on the 14th of September in Timisoara on the theme of „Local Development Strategies and the role of Roma NGO’s in their implementation”.At the meeting participated Roma NGO’s from 3 counties of the Western Region of Romania (8 representatives). They expressed their interest in collaborating with the Local Action Groups (LAGs) management team in order to apply for the calls on the Strategies’ social measures targeting the Roma communities. They underlined the need for special training in order to be able to apply for LAGs call and to be built their capacity of implementing these projects as the need for active measures is well-known and could be a priority in certain situations. The Comunity Local Led Development  process was explained by the Nevo Parudioms’team and the LAG’s activity within their area of interest (the LAGs where the Roma NGO’s have their activity).

The participants’ NGOs  have also shown  their interest and commitment to attend and be involved within  Roma Forum platform and activities.
